Lycka
Bjorn and Benny record their first album together: Lycka, meaning happiness. The songs are sweet, the harmonies are tight, and two female backing vocalists keep showing up on the tracks
Metronome Studios, Stockholm, autumn 1970. Björn and Benny are recording their debut album when two women lean into the same microphone, and the first note they sing together stops the tape operator mid-reel.
"Take a Chance on Me" (ABBA, official music video). The entire song is built on a vocal trick: four voices layered on top of each other, the phrase "take a chance" repeating underneath every verse like a heartbeat. That layering started on the Lycka sessions, years before anyone planned it.
The Debut
Lycka is Björn and Benny's first album as a duo, released in autumn 1970. The songs are melodic pop with folk traces, pleasant and professional but not yet extraordinary. What makes this record matter has nothing to do with the songwriting.

Take a Chance on Me, ABBA (1978)
From The Album, this was one of ABBA's biggest worldwide hits. The trick is structural: Agnetha and Frida sing the title phrase on a continuous loop underneath the verses, creating a bed of harmony that the lead vocal floats on top of. Strip those backing vocals out and the song collapses into nothing. Björn and Benny discovered this exact principle on the Lycka sessions eight years earlier, when two girlfriends sang backing vocals and the whole mix shifted.

TAP TO REVEAL: Why were the most important voices on the Lycka album hidden?
The Two Voices
Agnetha Fältskog, already a solo star in Sweden and Björn's girlfriend, agrees to sing backing vocals on the album. Benny's girlfriend Anni-Frid Lyngstad joins her. Neither woman is hired or auditioned, they're simply there because their boyfriends are making a record, and the result is extraordinary.

Lycka: The Numbers
Rock 'n' Roll Band, ABBA (1975)
From the self-titled ABBA album (1975). A song about being young and playing music with your friends, chasing a dream that nobody else believes in yet. The Lycka sessions were exactly that: four young Swedes making music together in a Stockholm studio, not knowing they were building something that would outlast all of them.
Rock 'n' Roll Band, ABBA (1975)
The lyrics are a love letter to the early days of any band: small stages, loud amps, and the conviction that this is what you were born to do. For ABBA, those early days were the folkpark circuit and the Lycka sessions, and the joy in this track is a direct echo of the happiness they named their first album after.
What was the name of Björn and Benny's debut album as a duo, and what does the title mean in English?
Agnetha Fältskog has multiple solo albums, a number one hit, and a reputation as Sweden's biggest female pop star. She doesn't need a group, but Björn is about to ask her to join one.
