Adele · S4 E4

21

Released January 24, 2011. It will sell over 31 million copies. Named after her age, like the first album, because she is still becoming the person she will be.

Cold Open

The numbers stop making sense. Album 21 sells 31 million copies worldwide, spends 24 weeks at number one in the US, and becomes the biggest-selling album of the 2010s. Adele is twenty-three years old.

Adele interview with the New York Post on album 21 (2011). Adele talks about the breakup, the writing process, and what it feels like to turn your worst year into your best record. No performance, no stage, just Adele explaining in her own words how 21 happened.

Song Breakdown

21 (The Album)

What makes 21 work is the sequencing. The album opens with the fury of "Rolling in the Deep" and ends with the acceptance of "Someone Like You," tracing the complete arc of a breakup from rage to resignation in forty-eight minutes. Every song is placed precisely where it needs to be. The anger comes first, the sadness comes second, and by the final track, you've lived through the entire relationship alongside her.

The Record Breaker

Album 21 is released on January 24, 2011 and proceeds to break nearly every sales record in the modern music industry. It sells 31 million copies worldwide, spends 24 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, and becomes the first album since 1999 to sell over three million copies in a single year in the US.

Bonus Listening

Water and a Flame (feat. Adele)

From Daniel Merriweather's Love & War (2009). One of Adele's only guest features, recorded right around the time the breakup that inspired 21 was happening. Over a sweeping soul arrangement, she trades verses with Merriweather about destructive love. The title says it all: water and flame don't mix, but they can't stay apart. It's the exact emotional territory she was about to turn into the biggest album of the decade.

Lyrics

Water and a Flame, Daniel Merriweather feat. Adele (2009)

Read the lyrics while you listen. Adele recorded this right as her relationship was falling apart. The song is a duet about two people destroying each other, and she was living every word of it. Within months, that experience would become Rolling in the Deep.
