BC Jean and Toby Gad write the song as a demo for Jean's own career, building it around an understated piano-and-guitar arrangement. When Beyonce hears the demo, she records it in a single session, stripping the production back even further to emphasize the conversational vocal delivery. She sings most of the verses in a lower register than her typical range, avoiding melisma and vocal runs in favor of direct, almost spoken phrasing. The restraint makes the chorus hit harder, and the contrast between quiet verses and soaring chorus becomes the song's emotional architecture.
