Island Studios, London, 1973. Don Henley sits at a piano he barely knows how to play, picks out a chord progression in G major, and starts singing to a man who will not let anyone love him.
Eagles, Desperado (1973). No single release, no music video, no promotion. Just a song so powerful it became famous on its own. Henley's vocal is one of the great recorded performances in rock: raw, pleading, and completely exposed.

The arrangement builds from solo piano to full band with the patience of a slow sunrise. Listen for the way Glyn Johns layers in the strings and pedal steel one element at a time, each new instrument adding emotional weight without cluttering the space around Henley's voice. The lyric works on two levels: a plea to the outlaw character of the concept album, and Henley talking to himself about the futility of pushing people away. The final verse hits harder every time because Henley sings it like he already knows it is too late.
The Piano
Henley is not a pianist. He is a drummer who picks things out with two fingers. But the melody that comes out of that limited technique has a simplicity a trained pianist would never write. Every note is essential because Henley does not have the skill to add anything unnecessary.

Linda Ronstadt's 1973 cover of "Desperado," from Don't Cry Now. The woman who brought the four Eagles together now sings their most personal song back to them. Her version strips the arrangement even further than the original, letting the melody breathe in a way that reveals just how strong the songwriting is underneath.
