The Circle Line

Sleeping on the tube, busking outside stations, and the heating vent at Buckingham Palace

Cold Open

Ed Sheeran wakes up on the last tube of the night with a guard shaking his shoulder. The train has stopped, the station is closing, and he needs to find somewhere else to sleep.

"The A Team" (Ed Sheeran, official music video, 2011). The video follows a young woman living on the streets of London. Ed wrote this song after volunteering at the Crisis homeless shelter during Christmas, at a time when he was sleeping rough himself. The gentleness of the production makes the subject matter hit harder.

Song Breakdown

The A Team, Ed Sheeran (2011)

Ed visited the Crisis homeless shelter in London during Christmas and met people struggling with addiction. He went home and wrote "The A Team" the same night. The title is slang for Class A drugs. The production is deliberately gentle: fingerpicked guitar, a soft vocal, strings layered underneath. It doesn't dramatize poverty. It just sits with it.

The Routine

Ed's daily cycle is brutally simple. Wake up wherever he slept, find somewhere to charge his phone, locate an open mic night, play, try to meet someone with a couch. On the nights when no couch materializes, he rides the tube until the service stops.

I didn't have anywhere to live for much of 2008 and the whole of 2009 and 2010, but somehow I made it work. I knew where I could get a bed at a certain time of night and I knew who I could call at any time to get a floor to sleep on.

SECRET REVEAL

TAP TO REVEAL: Where is the warmest place to sleep outdoors in central London?

Buckingham Palace, London

Not where you'd expect a future stadium headliner to sleep, but the heating vent near the arch kept Ed warm on nights when the last tube had already gone.

Bonus Listening

The City, Ed Sheeran (2011)

"The City" is Ed's London anthem, written while he was living in it with no fixed address. The track captures the energy and loneliness of a city that doesn't care whether you make it or not. After hearing about the Circle Line and the Buckingham Palace heating vent, these lyrics hit differently: this is someone who loved London even when London wasn't loving him back.

Lyrics

The City, Ed Sheeran (2011)

"This city never sleeps, I hear the people walk by when it's late." Ed writes about London as a living thing that keeps moving whether you can keep up or not. Read the lyrics knowing he had nowhere to go when the song ended, and every line becomes a survival report.
