March 25, 1947. A boy named Reginald Kenneth Dwight is born in a cramped Pinner semi-detached, where three generations share thin walls and his parents already can't stand each other.
Robert Downey Jr. wanders an empty mansion in a single unbroken take, lip-syncing about wanting love and never finding it. Written decades later, the song reads like a letter to the childhood Reg never got to have.
The House on Pinner Hill Road
Reg arrives into a household already tight with tension. His father Stanley is a Royal Air Force flight lieutenant who runs the home like a barracks. His mother Sheila shares the modest house with her parents, Fred and Ivy Harris. Three generations, paper-thin walls, and a marriage cracking from the start.
“He was a tough and unemotional man. Hard. In the RAF. He was dismissive, disappointed and finally absent.”
— Elton John
TAP TO REVEAL: What did three-year-old Reg do that stunned his entire family?
Which pianist inspired three-year-old Reg to first sit down at the family piano?
The Greatest Discovery
From the self-titled 1970 album. A hushed ballad told from a child's perspective as he meets his newborn brother for the first time. Bernie Taupin wrote it about his own childhood, but the wide-eyed tenderness maps perfectly onto the boy in Pinner who found wonder in a piano before he could read.
The piano becomes a battlefield. Next time: Stanley demands silence, Sheila smuggles rock records into the house, and Reg finds the one place where he can disappear.
