8 Mile
The movie. Jimmy Smith Jr. A semi-autobiographical film that grosses $240 million
October 2002. A rapper with zero acting credits walks into a Detroit theater for the premiere of his own movie. By the time the credits roll, the film industry has a new problem.
8 Mile: official theatrical trailer (2002). Eminem as Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith Jr., a factory worker from the wrong side of 8 Mile Road who battles his way through Detroit's underground rap scene. Director Curtis Hanson wanted the line between fiction and reality to disappear completely.
8 Mile (Soundtrack)
Eminem executive-produced the entire 8 Mile soundtrack and wrote three original songs for it: "Lose Yourself," "8 Mile," and "Rabbit Run." The soundtrack also served as a launchpad for Shady Records. Obie Trice, 50 Cent, and D12 all landed prominent spots. Listen to the title track for its raw, unpolished energy. Where "Lose Yourself" was designed for arenas, "8 Mile" sounds like it was recorded in a basement at 4 AM.
TAP TO REVEAL: How did Eminem prepare for the final battle scene in 8 Mile?
The Outsider's Eye
Curtis Hanson had just won an Oscar for L.A. Confidential, a 1940s noir about as far from Detroit hip-hop as possible. That distance is what made the film work. He treated the rap battles like courtroom dramas and refused to let the movie become a vanity project.
The Shelter (Saint Andrew's Hall)
The real-life basement venue beneath Saint Andrew's Hall that inspired the battle rap club in 8 Mile. Detroit's underground rap scene lived here, and many of the film's most intense scenes were shot on location.
8 Mile
The title track that gets overshadowed by "Lose Yourself" but might be the more honest song. Where "Lose Yourself" is anthemic and universal, "8 Mile" is specific and personal. Em raps about the actual road, the actual poverty, the actual doubt. It sounds like a demo tape from a man who has not made it yet.
8 Mile, Eminem (2002)
Read the lyrics while you listen. The title track overshadowed by "Lose Yourself" but possibly the more honest song. Specific, personal, and full of real doubt.
What is the name of Eminem's character in 8 Mile?
