Long Beach, California, October 28, 1987. A woman named Katonya Breaux holds her newborn son, Christopher Edwin Breaux, in a port city that will soon give the world Snoop Dogg and Warren G, but this boy will outrun them all in ways nobody expects.
"Thinkin Bout You" (Frank Ocean, live on SNL, 2012). Just Frank, a microphone, and a falsetto that stops the room cold. This SNL performance introduced millions of viewers to the voice that came out of Long Beach.

Built on a spare piano progression and a falsetto that sounds like it might crack at any second, this was the song that turned Frank Ocean from an underground name into a household one. Produced by Shea Taylor, Frank originally wrote it for singer Bridget Kelly, who released her own version first. His take strips everything back to raw vocal emotion. Listen for the way his voice floats above the beat instead of sitting inside it, that tension between vulnerability and control became his entire signature.

The Breaux Family
Katonya Breaux is a single mother who will raise Christopher largely on her own. His father, Calvin Edward Cooksey, exits the picture early and never comes back. Long Beach in the late 1980s is a rough port town where crack and gang violence compete with an emerging hip-hop scene, but Katonya keeps her son close and pointed somewhere else entirely.
