Burnage Lane, Manchester. Peggy and Tommy Gallagher raise three sons in a council house where the shouting never stops and the records never do.
Burnage, south Manchester, 1972. A third son is born to an Irish immigrant mother and an alcoholic father in a council house where the walls are thin, the shouting never stops, and the radio is the only way out.
Oasis, Rock 'n' Roll Star (1994). The opening track on the opening album. Written by a kid from a council estate who imagined exactly this life, then went out and took it.

The first sound on the first Oasis album is a swirl of feedback, and then Liam's voice cuts through like he's already famous. Noel wrote it as pure fantasy: a working-class kid dreaming of the stage while sitting in a bedroom in Burnage. The production is deliberately huge, all layered guitars and reverb, built to sound like a stadium anthem by five lads who'd never played one. Listen for the way Liam delivers the title line: not hoping, not wishing, just stating a fact that hasn't happened yet.

The Gallaghers
Thomas "Tommy" Gallagher left Duleek, County Meath, for Manchester in the early 1960s. Margaret "Peggy" Sweeney, one of eleven children, left Charlestown, County Mayo. They met at an Irish social club in 1964 and married within months. Three sons followed: Paul in 1966, Noel on May 29, 1967, and William John Paul, who everyone calls Liam, on September 21, 1972.

Peggy
Peggy left Tommy in 1982 and was offered a council house two years later. She took her three boys in the middle of the night, worked as a cleaner, and raised them alone. Both Noel and Liam have tried to buy her a bigger house for decades. She still lives in the same council home today, and she refuses to leave.

Half the World Away, Oasis (1994)
A B-side to 'Whatever' that became the theme to The Royle Family, the BBC's most Manchester sitcom. Noel sings lead over acoustic guitar, and every word is about wanting to escape. He later admitted the melody came from Burt Bacharach's 'This Guy's in Love with You,' moved up two keys and flipped backwards. The result sounds like staring out a council house window and imagining the world on the other side.

Read the lyrics while you listen. 'I'd like to leave the city and sail into the night.' Noel said songs from the Definitely Maybe era were all about the same thing: leaving somewhere and arriving somewhere else.
