Angelo
Her son is born in October 2012. She disappears from public life for two years. The silence is intentional.
October 19, 2012. Adele becomes a mother. Within weeks, the biggest-selling artist in the world cancels every public commitment and vanishes so completely that even the tabloids can't find her.
Adele at the BBC (2015). The moment she reappears. Disguised as an Adele impersonator at an audition, she fools a room full of her own fans before revealing herself. Hundreds of millions of people have watched this clip. It's the funniest and most human way any artist has ever ended a disappearance.
The Disappearing Act
Between Angelo's birth in October 2012 and the BBC special in late 2015, Adele releases almost nothing. No singles, no features, no social media. In the streaming age, where artists are expected to post constantly, she goes completely dark. The silence becomes its own kind of content: every month without a release increases the anticipation. By the time she reappears, the demand is so enormous that she can break the internet with a 30-second TV advert.
Angelo
Angelo James Konecki is born on October 19, 2012. His father is Simon Konecki, a charity entrepreneur Adele began dating in 2011. They keep the relationship and the pregnancy private until Adele confirms it herself in June 2012. From the moment Angelo arrives, Adele's priorities shift completely.
“"My son is the love of my life. He makes me so proud of myself, and he makes me like myself so much. He makes me not care about anything else."”
TAP TO REVEAL: What did Adele spend most of her time doing during the three-year absence?
How long did Adele's absence from public life last after Angelo's birth?
Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy), John Lennon
From John Lennon's Double Fantasy (1980). Written for his son Sean during the five-year period Lennon spent away from music, raising his child and baking bread. The parallel with Adele is exact: both artists stepped away from the biggest careers in music to be parents. Lennon's line "life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans" could be the subtitle of Adele's entire hiatus.
Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy), John Lennon (1980)
Read the lyrics while you listen. Lennon wrote this after five years of self-imposed exile from music to raise Sean. Adele did the same thing thirty years later for Angelo. The gentleness in Lennon's voice here is the same gentleness you hear on "Remedy" and "My Little Love": the sound of someone who has discovered that the biggest thing they'll ever do has nothing to do with a stage.
The Absence
The nappies are changed, the TV is off, and somewhere in a house in Sussex, Adele picks up a pen for the first time in years. Next episode: the silence ends, and the world discovers that absence doesn't diminish desire. It multiplies it.
