The Talent Discovery
Age seven, a dance recital, a teacher who heard something different
The person who first realized Beyonce could sing is not a music producer or a family member. It is her dance teacher, Darlette Johnson, who notices a girl humming along in class and calls Tina Knowles afterward with a simple message: your daughter has a voice you need to hear.
"Listen" from Dreamgirls (2006). Beyonce plays Deena Jones, a singer controlled by her manager. She fought for the role, which mirrors aspects of her own upbringing in ways she has acknowledged in interviews.
Listen (2006)
In the film, "Listen" is the moment Deena Jones breaks free from the manager who controls her career and public image. The parallel to Beyonce's own life, growing up with a father-manager who directed nearly every professional decision, is something she has been asked about directly. In interviews around the film's release, she called "Listen" one of the most emotionally difficult songs she had ever recorded, and said the difficulty was not technical.
The First Talent Show
After Johnson's call, Tina and Mathew entered Beyonce into a local school talent show. She was seven years old. She picked John Lennon's "Imagine" because the melody sat well in her voice. She performed it from memory in front of kids up to age fifteen, and she won. Mathew has said he walked in skeptical and walked out understanding that this was something real.

The Discovery Years
Beyonce beat contestants as old as 15 at her very first talent show. She was 7.
By age 11, she was accepted into HSPVA, the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston.
Before any record deal, she performed at Houston malls, grocery store openings, and local talent circuits.
Me, Myself and I (Beyonce)
From Dangerously in Love (2003). A slow-burn ballad about self-reliance after heartbreak. The vocal control on display here traces back to those early years: church choir, talent circuits, and a seven-year-old singing "Imagine" with enough conviction to silence a room.
In the film Dreamgirls, what is the name of the character Beyonce plays?
The talent was obvious. But Beyonce was not going to be a solo child singer, at least not yet. Mathew had a different plan: a group. Next up: how six girls from Houston formed Girl's Tyme in a suburban garage, and the sacrifices Mathew demanded before any of them had turned twelve.
