The American Landing
Tearin' Up My Heart and the stateside breakthrough
Spring 1998. A self-titled album that has been available in Europe for a full year finally lands in American record stores, and within weeks it sells over one million copies.
*NSYNC, Tearin' Up My Heart. The single that introduces *NSYNC to the United States. Bright, kinetic, impossible to ignore. When this hits Billboard, the same screaming that filled European arenas starts echoing through American malls.
The US Launch
RCA Records handles the US release. "Tearin' Up My Heart" climbs the Billboard charts. A Disney Channel concert special introduces the group to millions of American teenagers in a single night. The album crosses one million copies sold in weeks, not months.
TAP TO REVEAL: Why did Disney Channel help launch *NSYNC in the US?
Tearin' Up My Heart (1997)
Another Cheiron Studios production, built on a pulsing synth line and a chorus designed to be shouted back by thousands. The verses let Justin and JC trade leads while the pre-chorus builds tension through layered harmonies. By the time the chorus drops, all five voices are locked in and the hook is already stuck in your head.
TRL
TRL launches in September 1998, and *NSYNC is among the first acts to benefit from MTV's new daily countdown format. Total Request Live turns music fandom into a visible, screaming, street-level phenomenon. Times Square fills with teenagers holding signs, and *NSYNC videos compete for the number one slot every afternoon.
I Just Wanna Be with You
A mid-tempo album cut that shows the softer side of the debut record. Smooth vocal layering, a warm production palette, and the kind of easy melodic hook that made this album sell by the truckload on two continents.
How long before the US release was *NSYNC's debut album available in Europe?
*NSYNC now shares a country, a label system, and a manager with the Backstreet Boys. The press smells blood.
