Kendrick Lamar · S4 E6
m.A.A.d city
MC Eiht, a drive-by, and six minutes of Compton's violence rendered in surround sound
The beat switches and MC Eiht's voice enters like a warning siren from 1993. For the next six minutes, good kid, m.A.A.d city stops being an album and becomes a crime scene.
Kendrick Lamar & Imagine Dragons, m.A.A.d city / Radioactive (56th Grammy Awards performance, 2014). The night Compton's violence hit network television. Kendrick performs m.A.A.d city in handcuffs while Imagine Dragons build a wall of noise behind him.
“When Kendrick called me for that record, I knew what he needed. He didn't want a feature. He wanted Compton's voice from 1993 standing next to Compton's voice from 2012.”
— MC Eiht, interview with HipHopDX, 2012
m.A.A.d city ft. MC Eiht, Kendrick Lamar (2012), performed at the 56th Grammy Awards (2014)
The original track splits into two halves that feel like two different songs. The first is dense, breathless chaos: Kendrick narrates violence at a pace where syllables stack like shell casings, barely leaving room to breathe. Then the beat drops away and MC Eiht enters on a slower, darker groove, his voice carrying thirty years of Compton history in every bar.
The Witness From 1993
MC Eiht is not a random feature. He starred as A-Wax in Menace II Society (1993), one of the hood films that directly shaped GKMC's narrative. By placing him on the album's most violent track, Kendrick collapsed the distance between movie and music: the actor who played Compton's nightmare in a film is now narrating Compton's nightmare on a record.

Hood Politics, Kendrick Lamar
Buried in the middle of To Pimp a Butterfly, Hood Politics does what "m.A.A.d city" does not have time for: it explains the machinery behind the violence. Where "m.A.A.d city" shows you the bullet, Hood Politics shows you the gun. Kendrick raps "from Compton to Congress, it's identical" over a beat that sounds like a late-night news broadcast nobody is watching.
Two Comptons, One Track
The gunshots fade and the van goes silent. In the next twelve minutes, Kendrick will record the longest, most emotionally devastating track of his career: singing from the perspective of people who will not survive long enough to tell their own stories.
