Therapy
Confronting generational trauma, codependency, and the expectations of being a voice for millions
Somewhere between 2019 and 2021, Kendrick Lamar sits down across from a therapist and starts talking. What he says will become Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.
Kendrick Lamar ft. Sampha, Father Time (official music video, 2022). Kendrick raps about his father's influence, the toxic masculinity passed from generation to generation, and the therapy sessions where he finally started to unpack it all. Sampha's vocals on the hook sound like a wound that's just beginning to close.
Father Time ft. Sampha, Kendrick Lamar (2022)
The beat is warm and melodic, almost deceptively gentle for the subject matter. Kendrick traces his father's emotional unavailability through his own behavior: the same patterns, the same walls, repeated in his own relationships. Sampha's falsetto on the chorus turns the word "father" into something that aches. Listen for how Kendrick's delivery softens across the verses, moving from accusation to understanding.

“I went to therapy to understand my own selfishness, my codependency, the things I blamed everyone else for that were really about me.”

Breaking the Cycle
Kendrick grew up watching his father navigate trauma without tools, without language for it, without help. In Compton, therapy wasn't something men did. When Kendrick finally went, he discovered that the anger in GKMC, the fury of TPAB, and the questioning of DAMN. all pointed back to the same place: home.

Which spiritual teacher's voice appears throughout Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers?
Worldwide Steppers, Kendrick Lamar (2022)
Track three on Mr. Morale. Kendrick in raw confession mode, admitting to infidelity and processing the codependency his therapist helped him name. The production is sparse and unsettling, built on a looping vocal sample. No hooks, no choruses, just Kendrick talking to himself in the dark.
Worldwide Steppers, Kendrick Lamar (2022)
Read the lyrics while you listen. Kendrick confesses to infidelity while in a long-term relationship, and instead of justifying it, he traces the behavior back to its roots. The honesty is surgical. This is what therapy sounds like on a record.
