2:22 A Ghost Story

Her West End debut — and the standing ovations nobody expected

Cold Open

August 3, 2021. Lily Allen walks onto the stage of the Noel Coward Theatre in London's West End, and for the first time in her career, she is not there to sing.

"Close Your Eyes" by Lily Allen (2014). A Sheezus track about shutting out the world and trusting that you'll be OK. For an episode about stepping onto a stage with no music, no band, and no safety net, the title is everything: close your eyes, take a breath, and trust yourself.

The Play

2:22 A Ghost Story is a play by Danny Robins about a woman named Jenny who believes her house is haunted. Every night at exactly 2:22am, she hears noises her husband dismisses as nothing. The play is a taut, 90-minute thriller that asks a simple question: is Jenny losing her mind, or is something actually there? Lily Allen plays Jenny.

I've never been so terrified in my life. With music, you can have a bad night and nobody really notices. With theatre, every single person in the room knows immediately if you're not good enough.

Song Breakdown

Close Your Eyes, Lily Allen (2014)

'Close Your Eyes' is one of the Sheezus tracks critics overlooked: a mid-tempo song built on soft synths and a vocal that sounds like someone trying to convince themselves everything will be fine. Listen for the vulnerability in the delivery. This isn't Lily the provocateur or the satirist. It's someone genuinely afraid, talking herself through it, which is exactly the quality that made her casting in a psychological thriller so unexpectedly brilliant.

The Reviews

The reviews are a genuine shock. Critics who expected a celebrity vanity project are forced to admit they were completely wrong. Multiple publications praise Lily's performance, and the Olivier Award nomination that follows confirms what the opening night audience already knew: Lily Allen can act.

Bonus Listening

Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God), Kate Bush

Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill' was re-popularised in 2022 by Stranger Things, the show that made Lily Allen's husband a global star. The song's supernatural energy connects directly to the ghost story Lily is performing eight shows a week. Two British women, decades apart, both proving that the best art happens when you take a risk nobody asked you to take.

Lyrics

Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God), Kate Bush (1985)

These lyrics are about making a deal with God to swap places with someone you love. After watching Lily Allen play a woman haunted by something she can't explain, Kate Bush's words feel less like metaphor and more like stage directions.
