The Squat

Living in condemned buildings on the Upper West Side, surviving on Dunkin' Donuts and ambition

Cold Open

Fourth floor of a tenement on the Lower East Side, winter 1978. The radiator is dead, the lock on the front door is broken, and Madonna Ciccone is sleeping in a winter coat on a mattress she pulled off the sidewalk.

Borderline, official music video (1984). Shot on the streets of New York with spray paint, chain-link fences, and street corners, this is the visual document of the world Madonna came from. Her first top-ten hit, and the first time the camera finds her exactly the way she planned.

The Condemned Buildings

The New York City she walks into is in financial ruin. The 1975 fiscal crisis gutted public services, the South Bronx is literally burning, and landlords in Lower Manhattan are abandoning buildings because maintenance costs more than rent brings in. She moves through a series of apartments that barely qualify as habitable: no heat, no hot water, cockroaches behind every wall.

I wasn't used to being cold and I wasn't used to being hungry. Those were the real challenges when I moved to New York. I never once considered going back.

SECRET REVEAL

TAP TO REVEAL: Why did Madonna get fired from her job at Dunkin' Donuts on West 42nd Street?

Lower East Side, Manhattan

The blocks between Avenue A and Avenue D in the late 1970s: no garbage collection, buildings half-empty, rents below $200 because the city has essentially written this neighborhood off. This is where Madonna lands when she first arrives.

Bonus Listening

Physical Attraction, Madonna

From Madonna (1983). A deep cut from her debut album that captures the raw, hungry energy of the NYC club scene she was living inside. The synth bass hits like a downtown dance floor at 2 AM. If you want to hear what those years sounded like, start here.

Coming Next

Surviving is not the same as having a direction. Next: a spot in the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater gives Madonna the first real structure she has had since leaving Michigan, and she tears through it like someone who knows the clock is already ticking.
