A rehearsal studio on West 61st Street, 1978. Twenty bodies move in unison across the floor and one of them is slightly ahead of the beat, pushing forward, making the choreographer look up.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is one of the most prestigious modern dance institutions in the country. Madonna wins a scholarship to its third-tier training program, which is not the main company but still a serious placement. For a girl who arrived in the city months earlier with thirty-five dollars, getting into any level of Ailey is proof that Christopher Flynn was right about her.

The Ailey school operated out of studios near West 61st Street in the late 1970s before moving to its current home on West 55th. This is where Madonna trained daily, surrounded by dancers who had been at it longer and were technically better.
