A&M Studios, Hollywood, spring 1986. Patrick Leonard plays back a rough mix of "Live to Tell" and the room goes quiet. Madonna, sitting cross-legged on the control room floor, listens to her own voice singing about secrets and survival, and for the first time in her career she hears something on tape that sounds like the truth.
"Take a Bow" (1994). Eight years after True Blue, Madonna makes the definitive song about performing love. Directed by Michael Haussman, the video follows a romance between Madonna and a bullfighter in Spain. The connection to this era is direct: True Blue is the album she dedicates to Sean Penn, performing devotion in public while the marriage fractures in private.
The Third Album
True Blue is Madonna's declaration of artistic independence. Her first two records were defined by their producers: Reggie Lucas built the debut's dance-floor architecture, Nile Rodgers made Like a Virgin a pop machine. On True Blue, she insists on co-producing every track, bringing in Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray as collaborators who serve the songs rather than impose a signature sound.
