The Audition

Berry Gordy, Motown, and the day the world changed

Cold Open

Berry Gordy's estate, Detroit, August 1968. The Jackson 5 set up in the living room, Michael starts singing, the room goes still, and Gordy signs them before they leave.

The Love You Save. Jackson 5 (1970). Their third consecutive number-one single, with The Corporation's formula fully developed: tight arrangement, a hook in the first four bars, and Michael's vocal placed exactly where it needs to be.

Song Breakdown

The Love You Save. Jackson 5 (1970)

Key of C major, tempo around 130 BPM, produced by The Corporation. The opening guitar riff is a hook before the song even starts. The call-and-response between Michael and his brothers turns a live performance trick into a studio device. Three number-one singles in a row from three different angles was not luck: it was Gordy proving he could manufacture hits at will.

Who Berry Gordy Was

By 1968, Berry Gordy had built the most successful Black-owned business in American history. Motown Records put the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and the Temptations on the charts and in living rooms that had never bought Black music before. Gordy's genius was not discovering talent. His genius was knowing how to make white America love Black artists without asking white America to change anything about itself.

Berry Gordy was the one who really understood what we were. He saw something in Michael that was almost frightening to him. He said he'd never seen anything like it, and Berry Gordy had seen everything.

Mama's Pearl. Jackson 5

The fourth single, released January 1971. It went to number two, the first Jackson 5 single not to reach number one, revealing the limits of the formula. Gordy's reaction was immediate: push The Corporation to recalibrate. What followed was 'Never Can Say Goodbye,' which restored the momentum.
