The Demo Tape
Rihanna flies to the United States and records demo tracks with Rogers over several visits. The tape reaches the desks of every major label in New York. One of them belongs to Jay-Z at Def Jam Recordings
A Tidal server farm, January 28, 2016. At midnight, ANTI appears without warning on the streaming platform, and within hours the album leaks everywhere because the label accidentally triggers the release a day early.
Rihanna ft. Drake -- Work (official music video). Two videos in one: a dancehall party in a Toronto restaurant, then an intimate two-shot that blurs the line between performance and real chemistry.
Work (2016)
From ANTI, produced by Boi-1da and PartyNextDoor. The track is built on a sparse dancehall loop with Rihanna's vocal slipping between English and Bajan patois so fluidly that listeners debated the lyrics for weeks. Drake's verse adds a soft counterpoint, but the song belongs to Rihanna's refusal to translate herself for anyone. "Work" spent nine weeks at number one in the US and proved that a Caribbean accent was not a commercial limitation.
Four Years of Silence
Between Unapologetic in 2012 and ANTI in 2016, Rihanna released no album. She scrapped hundreds of songs, fired and rehired collaborators, and rejected every version of the record that felt safe. The delay drove her label and fans to frustration, but she refused to release anything that sounded like the old formula.
TAP TO REVEAL: How did ANTI actually get released?
“I wanted to make something that felt like me, not like what people expected from me.”
— Rihanna, Interview Magazine, 2015
Same Ol' Mistakes (Rihanna)
Originally by Tame Impala, reimagined on ANTI. A nearly seven-minute meditation on breaking free from old patterns and daring to try something new. It is the most unexpected track on the album and the one that signals how far Rihanna has traveled from Pon de Replay.
What business did Rihanna launch in 2017 that would make her a billionaire?
The girl from Westbury New Road is now a billionaire, a mother, and the most patient album-teaser in pop history. The world is still waiting for the next record, and Rihanna is in no rush.
