Robbie Williams · S1 E4

Janet

The woman who stayed, the decisions she made, and the life she built for a boy who couldn't stop performing

Cold Open

Burslem, 1977. Pete Conway left three months ago. Their son Robert is three years old, standing on the kitchen table, singing to an imaginary audience. Janet Williams watches him and is already asking a different question: not whether he can do this, but what it will take from her to make sure he gets the chance.

Angels (1997). Listen to it this time with a specific person in mind. Not Robbie on the Knebworth stage, not the teenage girl singing along. Think about a woman in Burslem who ran a florist and a newsagent and drove her son to holiday camp talent nights and never once told him to be realistic.

Song Breakdown

Angels (1997)

Co-written with Ray Heffernan in a Dublin hotel room in reportedly 25 minutes. The key lyric, 'I sit and wait, does an angel contemplate my fate?' is not a pop platitude. It is a son asking whether anyone is watching over him. The chorus, 'And through it all, she offers me protection,' could be about a guardian angel, a lover, or the woman who ran a newsagent in Burslem. Robbie has never fully specified, and that ambiguity is what makes the song universal.

The Shop

Janet Williams does not fall apart. She opens a newsagent's and florist's shop in Burslem and runs both. Robbie grows up behind the counter, watching his mother hold the structure upright while the men are elsewhere being interesting.

RAPID FIRE

The Janet Files

I learned how to work from my mum. Real work looked real depressing, because my mum worked all the hours that God sent her.

TAP TO REVEAL: What Janet Williams noticed the first time she saw her son perform in front of strangers.

Bonus Listening

She's the One -- Robbie Williams

From I've Been Expecting You (1999). It sounds like a love song, and it is. But listen to it after this episode. 'She's the one that makes me feel so good' takes on a different meaning when you think about the one woman who ran the shop, drove to the talent shows, and never once told her son to be realistic.

Quick Quiz

Angels, Robbie's most enduring ballad, is widely understood to be inspired primarily by which two women?

Coming Next

Next episode: summer 1982. Robbie Williams is eight years old. Janet has signed him up for a talent night at a holiday camp on the North Wales coast. The MC has seen two hundred child performers that season. He sees this one and does something he hasn't done in years: he tells a parent to keep going.
