Larry Parnes

A tour backing Johnny Gentle through Scotland. Five teenagers crammed into a van, playing village halls. Their first taste of life as professional musicians

Cold Open

The Wyvern Social Club, Seel Street, Liverpool, May 10, 1960. The Silver Beetles are about to audition for the most powerful pop manager in Britain, and their drummer hasn't shown up.

A song about working harder than humanly possible. On the Johnny Gentle tour, the Silver Beetles played tiny halls across the Scottish Highlands for almost no money, sleeping in the van between gigs. This is where the work ethic started.

Song Breakdown

Eight Days a Week (1964)

The title came from a remark by a chauffeur driving Paul to John's house: "Working hard?" "Eight days a week." John and Paul turned a throwaway comment into a pop single that opens with one of the first fade-ins in rock history. Most songs fade out. This one fades in, as if the band has been playing forever and someone just opened the door. George Martin initially thought it wasn't strong enough for a single. In America, it went straight to number one.

SECRET REVEAL

TAP TO REVEAL: What fake names did the Beatles use on the Scottish tour?

The Scottish Tour

Seven dates across the Scottish Highlands in May 1960, backing Johnny Gentle in town halls and dance clubs. They earned about £18 each for the entire tour, slept in the van, and their driver crashed at one stop. Drummer Tommy Moore took a hit to the face, then played the next gig with bandages and a chipped tooth.

Bonus Listening

Money (That's What I Want) (The Beatles)

From With The Beatles (1963). A Barrett Strong cover that became a ferocious live staple. John tears into this vocal like he means every word. For a band that spent a Scottish tour sleeping in a van for £18 each, this song hits differently.

The Wyvern Social Club

Seel Street, Liverpool. The venue where the Silver Beetles auditioned for Larry Parnes in May 1960. Allan Williams organized the audition. The building later became the Blue Angel nightclub.

Coming Next

The Scottish tour is over and the Silver Beetles are back in Liverpool with just enough experience to know they want more. Next: a local club owner named Allan Williams picks up the phone and dials Hamburg, Germany.
