The Beatles · S3 E6

The Transformation

Three Hamburg residencies, over 800 hours on stage. The Beatles arrive as amateurs and leave as professionals. The Reeperbahn forges them into something unstoppable

Cold Open

December 1960. The Beatles return to Liverpool after being kicked out of Hamburg: deported, broke, and apparently finished. Nobody in the city has any idea what those months of all-night sets have done to them.

Paul sings the optimistic verses, John sings the darker middle section. That push and pull is Hamburg in a song: the joy and the pain, the transformation and the cost.

Song Breakdown

We Can Work It Out (1965)

Paul and John wrote this facing each other across a piano at Jane Asher's family home on Wimpole Street. Paul's sections are major key and optimistic. John's 'life is very short' bridge shifts into a minor waltz, and Ringo switches from standard 4/4 mid-song. George Martin considered it their finest single. Released as a double A-side with 'Day Tripper,' it hit number one in both the UK and the US.

SECRET REVEAL

TAP TO REVEAL: Why were the Beatles actually kicked out of Hamburg?

I was born in Liverpool, but I grew up in Hamburg.

John Lennon, as quoted in The Beatles Anthology, 2000

The Bass Player

With Stuart gone, Paul volunteers for bass, restringing a right-handed Hofner upside down because he's left-handed. He doesn't just learn the instrument. He reinvents what a bass player does in a rock band, turning it from a timekeeper into a melodic voice.

Bonus Listening

There's a Place (The Beatles)

From Please Please Me (1963). 'There's a place where I can go when I feel low.' Hamburg was the place where the Beatles went when nobody in England wanted them. They found themselves there, lost a friend there, and came home changed forever.

Quick Quiz

What did Paul McCartney have to do differently from most bass players because he's left-handed?

Coming Next

Back in Liverpool, word spreads fast: the Beatles are different now. A sweaty basement club on Mathew Street is about to become the most famous venue in rock and roll history.
