The Face Revealed
The most anticipated reveal in indie music. When the world finally sees Abel Tesfaye, nothing changes and everything does
A photograph surfaces on a Toronto blog showing a young man with a large afro and shy eyes. Within hours, the most obsessive music mystery of 2011 has a face.
The Weeknd, Rolling Stone (2011). One of the earliest visuals from the mixtape era, and one of the first times the world could see the face behind the voice. Over glacial production, Abel declares himself rootless, disconnected, a rolling stone with no ties and no plans to grow any. Watch it knowing that the anonymous era is about to end: the mystery is dissolving, and the music has to stand on its own.

Illangelo strips the production to almost nothing: a distant synth pad, scattered percussion, and Abel's voice occupying the center like it is the only thing left in the room. The lyrics are a confession of total rootlessness, a young man who has severed every connection and feels both proud and terrified in the same breath. Listen for how the vocal never rises above a murmur, as if Abel is telling you a secret he has never said out loud. As the face behind The Weeknd became public, this track carried a different weight: the mystery was gone, but the loneliness in the voice was clearly real.
The Ghost Has a Name
The Weeknd's real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye. He is 21 years old, Ethiopian-Canadian, from Scarborough. The internet's ghost is a kid from the Toronto suburbs who looks nothing like the dark, dangerous character the music suggested.
TAP TO REVEAL: Was the face reveal planned or accidental?
Echoes of Silence
The title track from the third and final mixtape, released December 2011. "Echoes of Silence" is Abel at the very end of the anonymous era, singing over a production that sounds like a cathedral at midnight. The last major transmission from the ghost before the world learned his name and everything accelerated.

Read the lyrics while you listen. The final words from the anonymous era lay bare Abel's darkest impulses, a fitting close to the mystery before the world put a face to the voice.
What is The Weeknd's full real name?
The anonymous era is over, and every label in the industry is calling. Next season: Thursday, Echoes of Silence, Republic Records, and the birth of Trilogy.
