The Yeezus Tour
Opening for Kanye West and learning how to turn a concert into an experience
An arena somewhere in North America, late 2013. Travis Scott stands in the wings watching Kanye West walk onto a bare stage with nothing but a mountain, a mask, and 15,000 people losing their minds.
Kanye West, All Day, live at the 2015 BRIT Awards. Kanye fills the stage with a crowd, sets actual fire, and turns a polite awards ceremony into a riot. This is the philosophy Travis absorbed night after night on the Yeezus Tour: a concert should feel dangerous, not comfortable.
The Yeezus Classroom
The Yeezus Tour runs from October 2013 to March 2014. Travis opens every show, performing Upper Echelon and Owl Pharaoh tracks to audiences who have no idea who he is. Then he stands on the side of the stage and watches Kanye perform the most stripped-down, aggressive arena show in hip-hop history.

TAP TO REVEAL: What did the Yeezus Tour stage look like?
“There is no Utopia without Kanye West. There is no Travis Scott without Kanye West.”
— Travis Scott, on stage at Circus Maximus, Rome, August 2023 (reported by Rolling Stone)
All Day, Kanye West (2015 BRIT Awards performance)
The studio version of All Day is aggressive. The BRIT Awards performance is something else entirely. Kanye brings dozens of performers onto the stage, the beat pounds through the venue, and actual flames erupt behind him. The cameras can barely keep up. This is the exact energy Travis would later channel into his own festival headlining sets: fill the stage, fill the pit, make it feel like the building might not survive the night.

From Opening Act to Headliner
By the time the Yeezus Tour ends in March 2014, Travis isn't the same performer who started it. He's watched 40+ arena shows from the best seat in the house. He knows how to read a crowd, how to control energy, and how to make a room full of strangers feel like a single organism. The kid from Missouri City now has a show.
How many shows did the Yeezus Tour run, with Travis Scott as opening act?
NO BYSTANDERS, Travis Scott
From ASTROWORLD (2018). This is the song Travis built for the show he learned to give on the Yeezus Tour. Juice WRLD and Sheck Wes join for a track designed to destroy venues. The chorus is a command: "Fuck the club up." When Travis plays this live, the crowd becomes a single wave. It's the purest expression of what he learned watching Kanye every night: make the audience feel like participants, not spectators.
NO BYSTANDERS, Travis Scott (2018)
Read the lyrics while you listen. The title is a mission statement: there are no bystanders at a Travis Scott show. Everyone participates. That philosophy started with 40 nights standing in the wings of the Yeezus Tour, watching what happens when you give a crowd permission to lose control.
The tour is over. The mentors have done their part. Now Travis needs to prove he can do this alone. Season 3: a free mixtape called Days Before Rodeo is about to change everything, starting with a Young Thug collaboration that sounds like nothing else in hip-hop.
